I just received the following note from Mike Dyer, the Maritime Curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. I never knew that the Morgan had carried passengers from the Cape Verde islands to New Bedford, and I thought you all might be interested, too. It's pretty cool!
While Halter's list based upon Paul Cyr's records indicates that the Charles W. Morgan did return to New Bedford from Desolation Island in 1917 carrying passengers from Cape Verde and again after her penultimate whaling voyage returning in 1920, she was never an actual packet in the formal sense the way many whaling vessels eventually were. She was never "in the packet trade" but she did carry passengers which is interesting in itself I think.
